Isidore of Seville

Isidore of Seville
(c. 560–636)
   Archbishop, Educator and Saint.
   Isidore was a younger brother of Leander, Archbishop of Seville. He succeeded his brother as Archbishop in c. 600 and he presided over the Councils of Seville in 619 and Toledo in 633. However, he is mainly remembered for his writings. His Sententiarum Libri Tres was the first Latin manual of doctrine; his Etymologiarum sive Originum Libri Viginti was a twenty-volume encyclopaedia of human knowledge; his Historia de Regibus Gothorum, Vandalorum et Suevorum was a history of the Visigoths and he also produced several books on the Bible. He was a man of great generosity and sanctity and has been described as the ‘schoolmaster of the Middle Ages’. In 1722 he was named a Doctor of the Church.
